Welcome to Shadow Day! Once a month, at schools throughout Portland and in Yamhill County, students in The Shadow Project tally and “spend” their accumulated Shadow bucks. Gifts for parents or siblings are big sellers. Kids may also choose books or school supplies, art supplies, or small toys. The Shadow Project not only motivates struggling students, it encourages generosity, teaches budgeting and saving, as kids may choose to put “high-ticket” items on “layaway.”

Jocilyn

Jocilyn shows off the shirt she picked out for her Dad. “I used to be bad at math,” she said, “but now I’m good at math, and at reading and writing, too.”

Alex

Alex proudly displays the two-frisbees he bought with his stars. Alex had worked so hard this month he could have bought a third item, but instead, chose to give his extra stars to classmate. “I knew he didn’t have enough to buy two things,” said Alex, “and it makes me feel good to share with friends.”

Will

"Earning is fun,” said Will. “I stay focused, and I am reading much better this year.”

Noah

With Father’s Day approaching, Noah selected a tee-shirt and freezer mug, “because I wanted my Dad to have something nice for Father’s Day,” he says.

Chloe

Chloe bought two journals, so her Dad could pick the one he liked best for Father’s Day, and she could keep the other.

Kathleen

“I like buying things and giving them away, because I like to make people happy,” says third-grader Kathleen.

Nationwide, one in three students with a learning disability drops out of school. With your help, we can lower the odds.
