As summer approaches, parents of school-aged children begin to consider how to best strike the balance between fun and learning until school resumes in the fall. For parents of kids who learn differently, finding that that balance can be crucial for preparing them for a successful school year.
If you are one of those parents, The Shadow Project may have just the right summer program for your child. Our Summer Goal Setting Program is a free, online program to support kids’ confidence, motivation and behavior during the long summer days.
For those who do not yet have The Shadow Project programs at their child’s school, The Shadow Project is a Portland nonprofit founded by a parent of a child who struggled with reading. Working with special education teachers, The Shadow Project developed a highly successful program that helps K-8 students with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism build skills for school and life success.

Our summer program extends the student supports provided during the school year to families so that they can keep their kids motivated to work toward their goals and practice positive behaviors after school lets out for the year. It can help establish a summer routine that is not only motivating, but fun!
How does it work?
Our summer program empowers parents to create a supportive, engaging summer for their child who learns differently. You will be equipped with the tools your child needs to continue to make progress in reading, comprehension, paying attention, and behavioral development. The basic components include:
- Parents/caregivers help their child set and work toward weekly goals.
- Children earn “Shadow Bucks” for making progress and reflecting on goals.
- Weekly email contains all the materials you need, video resources, and one-on-one support for parents.
- At the end of the session, kids get to spend Shadow Bucks on fun items from our online “Shadow Store” filled with books, art supplies, LEGOs and more!
And it’s all free of charge to you, thanks to the many supporters of The Shadow Project!
We’re offering two sessions that will keep your child engaged throughout the summer ahead. All materials and support are also available in Spanish.
Session 1:
June 23—July 20, 2025
Session 2:
July 21—August 15, 2025
As one Shadow Project parent shared, “It’s a chance for you to partner with your child and to set goals that you both agree with…. There’s all kinds of learning opportunities along the way with this program!“
