The Shadow Project Seeks Board Members with Teaching Experience
If you’ve spent time in a classroom, you know this: 1 in 5 children learns differently. Maybe it’s the kid who lights up when you offer audio-books. The student who thinks best while moving. The child who needs to feel safe before they can focus on fractions.
You’ve also seen what’s possible when schools meet students where they are. When the right tools unlock reading comprehension. When movement becomes part of learning. When students build on their strengths and achieve their goals.
Since 2003, we’ve partnered with educators across Portland Metro and SW Washington to support over 22,000 K-8 students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and trauma. Our approach is simple: instead of asking “What’s wrong?” we ask “What is strong?” Then we build from there.

Now we’re looking to expand our impact at the board level, and we need people who’ve actually been in the classroom to help lead the way.
Join The Shadow Project’s Board of Directors
We’re seeking former educators (local to Portland Metro) to join our volunteer Board of Directors. The time commitment is roughly 3-4 hours per month, including quarterly meetings and committee work. We’re especially interested in folks with experience in fundraising, finance, education administration, or nonprofit governance.
Right now, almost half of the students we serve are BIPOC, and we’re deepening partnerships with schools navigating big shifts in how literacy and inclusion show up in the school day. Board members help us think strategically about sustainability, partnership, and what might need to look different in the years ahead.

This year, nearly 90% of participating teachers told us they feel more empowered to serve students from different cultural backgrounds. Two-thirds of students are building stronger persistence skills. Each year, our programs reach thousands of kids.
Interested or Know Someone Who Might Be?
If you have a teaching background and are local to Portland Metro, or if you know someone who fits this description, we’d love to chat! Board members serve three-year terms and are expected to make an annual financial contribution at a personally meaningful level. View the full Board Member Description.
