great reading games helping special needs students learn to read

National Reading Champions

Esnoy (left) and Eric ranked in the top 5% of students from nearly 1,000 elementary schools in a national competition for nontraditional readers and are bursting with confidence.

The boys are graduates of The Shadow Project’s Reading Mentors program, which pairs assistive reading technology designed for children with learning challenges with caring mentors who help them set goals and celebrate their progress.

Students in this program are gaining up to two years in reading ability and making friends over a shared story.

“With the Reading Mentors program, I have seen most of my 4th and 5th graders become readers and decode at grade level.”

Beth Brod, special education teacher, Woodmere Elementary School
